Jealous

JEALOUS, originally uploaded by Peru Tha Damaja.

I was emailing my sister about running races over the weekend and she told me that in DC she owns her own timing chip for races where they do that kind of thing. It frequently gets her an entry discount, she doesn’t have to take the chip off at the finish chute, and she gets one chip she’s familiar with fastening. I think this sounds awesome and immediately called Super Jock n Jill to find out if such a thing is available in Seattle. It’s not. First, she got a totally awesome Barbie for Christmas and now this. What’s next?

    (1) It’s not a Barbie. Barbie is a *highly* protected trademark of Mattell. I’m surprised you haven’t been sued for misuse yet. (FYI–It’s a Cindy doll. If she were a real person, I think she’d actually be able to stand up (unlike Barbie).)

    (2) Since you’ve got time, why not campaign for some kind of standardization of chips that are used in Seattle? On the east coast, if it’s chip timed, everyone uses Champion Chip. As you know, once you get a “tipping effect” where most races/people use one kind of chip, everyone else will likely following suit rather than get left behind. It might cut into your daily-blogging time or hanging-out-in-coffee-shops time, but you accomplish something the Pacific Northwest could thank you for.

Great idea. I just contacted the big local running club to see if anybody knows what’s up with this or see if I might get that ball rolling.

Sorry for confusing Barbie and Cindy…
