The Quitter
I don’t think anyone reads my blog who doesn’t know I’m quitting my job but here’s a quick top ten list of why. In no particular order:
- The job feels like it’s killing me.
- Too much work. It’s like Michael Scott says - Mo money, mo problems.
- Too many late nights that I’ll never get back, too many missed birthdays of people who are important to me.
- The commute.
- Time to work on a product I want to use.
- Who could miss the Seattle summer?
- The matching gifts program is a great way to make the world a better place but there have to be better ways than working on awesome presentation software and giving back as a spurious effect.
- The things that are gone: the immersive culture of zaniness, large events, a good gathering place for the larger team at major events, the amazing benefits program (which has really just been replaced by the still very, very good program), my friends, the “big company but feels like a small company” feeling, most of my friends.
- We just spent a ton of money on new coffee dispensers but nobody realized we were buying the “I see you pee” - I can’t work someplace where the facilities procurement is that so far detached from the playground to not see that one coming.
- It turns out the last weeks of a high stress job are easily among the best of your career.
