Pimp my explorer icons

Here’s a handy tip I wish I’d tried a while ago. Say you have a flash cardreader or just a bunch of other USB devices that you connect to your computer all the time but it’s hard to tell which is which. For instance, my flash reader has four connectors - CF, SD/MMC, SomethingINeverUse, and SomethingElseINeverUse. Just drop two files on the USB device - autorun.inf some icon file (say, autorun.ico) and have the autorun.inf contents indicate:

[autorun]

icon=autorun.ico

Now when you plug in your device, you’ll see the .ico icon instead of the default device icon. In the screenshot you can see a tea-pot I use for a Samsung mp3 player (which also has a volume label “tTunes”) and an icon for a 512mb Flash card that I use in a digital camera. There are more settings you can put in the autorun.inf - I may write more later about how I use this for my podcast syncing setup. The icons are really handy, though. It’s a shame that this isn’t available in an unformattable space of the USB device.

You can get a few handy icons (pictured at right) for cf, minisd, sd, and the teapot here (at least you will be able to soon…).
