There Goes the Neighborhood

Two nights ago Tanya and I are sitting at home. I’m trying to conquer level 7 in the new Super Mario Bros (I have almost lost all feeling in my left thumb) and she’s watching the tour when we hear this *BOOM* from outside. “What the hell was that?!” I look out our window and see a car in the median directly across the street from our house with a huge cloud of smoke coming from the hood - if it hadn’t stopped in the median it probably would have plowed straight into our car in front of our house or worse, our house. My first thought is “Holy shit!” Then I see the cop car lights appearing through the smoke, then I see the driver running from the car almost directly for my front door. So my second thought is “Holy shit!!!” Ever fast on my toes, I immediately lock the doors and tell Tanya “Quick! let’s hide in the bathroom!” I don’t feel incredibly brave about that one but what should I have done? A few minutes later we leave the bathroom and realize the situation outside has probably settled (there are ~30 onlookers by now and almost as many cops). “Hey!” a neighbor calls to the police, “he ran RIGHT past me - do you want to send somebody over here to look for him?” “No, we have a K9 unit coming.” They obviously deal with situations like this a lot more than I do judging by how casually they handled everything.

In the end, they picked the runner up pretty quickly and it turned out they were staying with the car because there was another person in the passenger seat. Ohhh, that explained the huge crash in the windshield. Ouch. The person in the passenger seat was apparently the girlfriend of the guy who ran. Which makes you wonder: what kind of asshole leaves his girlfriend in a car after his recklessness causes her to smash her head into the windshield? The same kind who thinks she won’t tell the cops who he was after doing that, I guess. There wasn’t much other news though. They caught the runner, took the girlfriend away on a stretcher, eventually towed the car, and that was it. Just another Wednesday night in north central (Seattle).

    Neat!
That’s awesome! But where the hell was your camera?!

    I’ve got a couple shots…
But they’re on my camera at home. I’m a dummy for not getting around to uploading them yet but they’ll be online shortly. I’ve only got the car, fire truck, and ambulance, though - no action shots!

Duh? Run outside with a baseball bat and chase the guy down! That’s what I do when people walk through my yard. You should’ve seen the last kid who did that. You bet your ass he didn’t live to see his seventh birthday.

Oh, great story, buy the way.

Have you ever heard the Dane Cook bit about car crashes? Totally reminds me of that - people running out, wanting to talk to the cops, etc. How very exciting for you. :)
