A new fathers’ day tradition. My dad started a habit of shaving in the car years ago (with the Remington cordless he’s using here that I bought him for Christmas 20-odd years ago) when we still lived in the Twin Cities during his commutes to the West Publishing Company. The razor was kept in the Kleenex box near the driver’s seat and there was always an opportunity to reflect on the day for the 5-10 minutes while the tinny din dominated the audible range in the car. Sunday we went out for a delicious brunch with mimosas, belinis, and screwdrivers, and got back in time to play with my parents’ new puppy, Flora. It’s a little late in coming but happy fathers’ day, Dad!

I’m super happy with my
href="http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/evol_desk.htm">Evolution
keyboard and its programmability except that there is no terse
summary of the remap commands and I always wind up hunting through my
desk to find my manual where I wrote out the terse shortcut to the
remap functions. So for my own convenience, here are the remap
sequences for this beast (sclk = scroll lock):
| Function — Description |
Sequence |
Notes |
| Reset — reset all programmed settings |
SCLK+CTRL+F10 |
Hold sequence until lights stop blinking Alternate: hold F7 during reboot |
| Remap — remap some key |
SCLK+F12, [src], [dest], SCLK+F12 |
|
| Macro — program some macro |
SCLK+F11, [trigger], [macro], SCLK+F11 |
[trigger] is a single KEY or SHIFT+KEY, ALT+KEY, CTRL+KEY. [macro] is the macro |
| Key repeat speed |
SCLK+F9, F1 - F12, SCLK+F9 |
F1=1, F12=300 cycles per second (default is somewhere between F7, F8) |
Also - if a single key seems dead: try resetting the macros. Try doing
a macro to remap the key to itself (SCLK+CTRL+F12, [key], [key],
SCLK+CTRL+F12) - if the key is electronically active the keyboard
light flash rate will change during the remap.
My current problem is one I have experienced before. Some key (right
now, ‘d’) seems to stop working. I debug in various ways (remapping,
opening and cleaning the keyboard) until the key starts working. Then
it behaves strangely for a while - right now on successive presses, I
get different numbers of that character, or none at all. Here is a
sequence of d’s separated by hyphens: dd-d–d—d—d-d-d-dd.
Annoying…

Normally, I don’t think of myself as a leader. Today as I was stuck
working from home sick, trying to kill time between spoonfuls of cough
syrup with codeine (sweet Jesus why is this the first time in my life
I’ve used this stuff?), my attention was drawn as it so often is
during the summer months, to
href="http://underdogseattle.com/DOTL/index.asp">Drinks on the
Links. The big question this year is whether we would have team
T-shirts. I’ll never forget Chico’s Bail Bonds from the last
season. Not because they got way too drunk and puked in the 18th hole,
were outstanding athletes, or because I even met anyone on their
team. But they had team t-shirts!
My teammate, Beth, and I have been the principal T-shirt design
contributors. This makes sense since
href="http://www.thingydings.com/">she does this
semi-professionally and I like to use my 3d modeling
program. After a couple searches I came up with a company that looks
like they can do what we need for a reasonable price and then
contacted Beth about this. When we started talking about the print
shop was when I realized my leadership potential. Beth: “Yeah, so that
place is right near me and I could probably go there.” Me: “Huh?
Isn’t it downtown by the market?” Beth: “No, I think it’s just down
the street.” And she was right - it is right by where she lives.
Creating work that is instantly (or serendipitously) delegatable to
others == transcendent leadership.
